Greek government talks dangerously
A senior MP of the New Democracy party tells the world Greece is ready to fight (!) if called upon by NATO, EU
Greek politics has the dynamism of a 3-ring circus. And the incumbent government of PM Koulis Mitsotakis lets no stone unturned to demonstrate it does exist in a world of cheap jokes and dangerous “bravado” language that ignores the vagaries of not controlling one’s tongue.
The latest of this pathetic rigmarole came from a senior ND MP, Vangelis Meimarakis. A veteran ND front liner, Meimarakis, who’s, by far, not among “the best and the brightest” in Greek politics, suddenly decided to announce Greece, as a member of NATO and the EU, has the obligation to respond if these overarching organizations call upon their members to go to the trenches to defend freedom and democracy.
In quieter times, Meimaraki’s verbal bravado would have been dismissed as usual boasting of mostly clueless politicos. But today, with the Middle East going up in flames, with a Moslem coalition beating the Jewish state to bits, and Ukraine bloodily collapsing under Putin’s methodical blows, words thrown out like this could trigger unexpected, and dangerous, diplomatic trouble.
To put it simply, Greece does not have the wherewithal “to flex her muscles” being a country suffering from many maladies—political, strategic, economic etc. With a steadily declining birth rate, a wobbly economy, and the perennial threat from Musselman Turkey, Hellas possesses next to no wiggle space to play global strategic politics.
Meimarakis seems to forget that the neo-sultanic Turkiye misses no opportunity to deafeningly declare that HALF of the Greek Aegean Sea is hers to do as she pleases in pursuit of her dream of a Turkish Blue Homeland, which is presently the centerpiece of an aggressive neo-Ottoman strategy of military conquest.
Mitsotakis et.al. have already submitted to Turkish demands and have kowtowed before the all merciful neo-sultan. An ongoing endless process of “reconciliation” talks with the Erdoganists is the best demonstration that the incumbent Greek government is not exactly hard-knuckled when it gets to vital national strategic interests and will do its best not to rock the Turkish aggressive boat.
Meimaraki’s latest empty boasting is a perfect example of how the ND administration perceives serving the country’s vital strategic interest by giving Greece’s worst and most dangerous current enemy a broad opening to pursue gobbling up the Greek Aegean.
Sadly, and as I’ve said before, the more things change, the more they are the same.
