Greece: Who's this suspect gay parachutist?
A homosexual Greek American lands out of nowhere at the helm of Greece's main parliamentary neo-communist opposition. Why?
Stefanos Kasselakis was one small blip on the map of the Greek Diaspora until his recent out-of-nowhere landing in Athens to assume the con of the devastated neo-communist Meccano party of SYRIZA that presided over the Greek sovereign collapse of 2014-19 among others.
SYRIZA, a groupuscule of “soft” Marxists, street terroristic thugs, illiterate renegades from the Stalinist Communist Party of Greece (KKE), and cross-eyed bankrupt “Euro-communists” left without a roof over their heads beginning in the late 1980s, was routed during the last Greek general election sinking from a commanding previous 39 pc of the vote to a mere 17.83 pc, a figure that placed it dangerously at the edge of disarticulation and dissolution.
Soon after this Waterloo-like disaster, SYRIZA’s leader and former PM, Alexis Tsipras, a distinctly stupid and illiterate neophyte, announced his resignation from the party and politics in general.
Within hours, HPS (Hellenic Political Ship) SYRIZA found herself in stormy seas with a bridge bereft of a captain.
But, lo and behold, within days/weeks of this painful blow, the most unlikely man from America landed in the middle of the smoldering SYRIZA ruins to take the con and re-generate something that was almost clinically dead since its day of inception.
The Kasselakis incident is unique in the history of Greece.
Never before an unknown specimen of a man has been imported from abroad to command a Greek parliamentary party. Since her inception as a sovereign “modern” state in 1832, Greece has only once invited a Greek of the Diaspora to take the con of the Nation.
Ioannis Kapodistrias, a former foreign minister of imperial Russia, and a recognized distinguished politician in Europe of his time, was called by the provisional assembly of the Greek freedom warriors to take the control of nascent independent Hellas. And it was not until 1959 when Andreas Papandreou (1919-1996), the son of veteran Greek politician and prime minister, George Papandreou, was invited to return to Hellas from the US where he had lived, studied, and worked since 1938, to add his political and intellectual dynamism to his father’s “unyielding struggle” for real democracy in Greece.
Andreas undermined his father’s politics beginning Day One, proudly displayed his Trotskyism, dabbled with pushing Greece toward his own version of Nasserism, and eventually stirred the country down the road of rampant “progressive” corruption, which, slowly but surely, landed her in her disastrous 2014 sovereign bankruptcy.
In comparison to Andreas the politician (who was a prominent and energetic philanderer among all others) the happy gay Kasselakis, with his male companion, his pet pooch, and his aggressive demand of “mainstreaming” homosexuality in Greece in all of its iterations, is one fat political zero.
Even veteran SYRIZA cadres either dismissed the gay pride parachutist out of hand or retreated into a dissatisfied and morose incredulity. Conversative commentators, on the other hand, connected the happy homo’s American identity with Washington’s distinct desire to see Greece dovetail, by hook or by crook, with America’s grand schemes in the Mediterranean which have been struggling with a neo-Islamist Turkey that never stops growling and demanding to be recognized as the world’s most recent Great (Mohammedi) Power.
The Turks aren’t all that popular even among Moslem countries and remain a distinct venomous Islamist thorn on “united” Europe’s side.
The Erdoganist theocratic dictatorship, well camouflaged behind fake European-style “free elections,” misses no opportunity to telegraph the West Turkey wants half of the Aegean and the Finlandization of most of the Greek Aegean islands, not to mention the lion’s share of Aegean energy reserves. And Washington, struggling with her own abysmal crisis of Bidenism and the precipitous deterioration of American domestic politics, wants a pliant and obedient Greece ready to perform the geopolitical hara-kiri demanded of her without “ifs,” “buts,” and footnotes that could destabilize the dirty, and strategically dangerous, games with Erdogan’s neo-Ottomanism.
The happy gay Kasselakis may be a fly on the global wall, but, at the Hellenic level, he emerges as an almost tried, tested, and verified agent of US regional strategic interests that must be extended and protected at any price.
Those who have yet to realize how similar Kasselakis’s language is to the one deployed by PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who daily grows into an even more obedient servant of Great Power demands (with Washington leading the pack), need to pause and start reading the news more closely and suspiciously—beginning with the rather mysterious arrival of the Happy Gay Stephanos, who has, among others, a verified past of studying at US institutions closely linked to US intelligence and strategic agencies.
It is important for those Greeks who honestly worry about the future of this damaged and tortured land, to intensify the critical reading of events that are glaringly telling the story of how Hellas is yet again en route to another national catastrophe.
Kasselakis is a modified proverbial canary in the mine, whose antics telegram what is in store for Greece as she trudges through one minefield after another hoping to avoid the worse. Historically, however, the outcome of this current developing disaster is almost pre-ordained because most “modern” Greeks have forgotten the meaning of patriotism.
And those who forget are destined to pay the price.
Still, the question remains: Who chose Stefanos and why?
